"Apple notes in the patent application that the sensor would be “approximately the width of an average user’s fingertip, but only several pixels tall, typically between 1 and 8 pixels, and possibly as many as 16 pixels tall” when viewed from above.
Apple doesn’t get too into what functions for users the fingerprint sensor would provide, but does note that “the sensor captures a number of thin strips of the fingerprint as the finger is swiped, and the complete fingerprint is assembled in software for use in authentication.”

Although the patent application was filed in February this year, the ideas described are based on previous filings by STMicroelectronics’ fingerprint business, which was later merged with AuthenTec, and ultimately became Apple’s intellectual property. One of the inventor of the STMicroelectronics patent in fact works for Apple now, and is listed as an inventor on this application as well.
Both rumors as well as hiring activity suggest that Apple’s planning to do something substantive with fingerprint sensors soon, possibly suggesting to the inclusion of a sensor in the next iPhone as the differentiating factor, since the physical design is likely to remain the same.

State-of-the-art in the field of biometric smart cards, with a "system-on-card" type of fingerprint sensor with a full guarantee of privacy.
Developed on the ISO 7810 ID-1 format, the same as conventional credit cards, it allows for the authentication of the user, increasing the degree of security which is today entrusted to the simple PIN.
Over the next week current Card Tech management will take up roles on the board at TBYH, details and information on name changes etc will be released in the coming week.
